Frequently Asked Questions

Which Lone Pine books are abridged?

All the Newnes editions of the books (Mystery At Witchend to The Man With Three Fingers) are full text.  Paperback and later hardback editions (including Goodchild) of these stories are abridged.  The later books, Rye Royal to Home to Witchend, were written with the restrictions of paperback production in mind and so all editions are full text whether in hardback or paperback.

Do all the Lone Pine books have maps?

All the stories except Rye Royal had maps associated with them although these are sometimes omitted from Goodchild editions and some non-Armada paperbacks.

Does Witchend exist?

The forwards of many of the books say that you will not find a house called Witchend.  This is true but it is based on a real house in the location described in the stories.  With some simple detective work, it is possible to find this house and most of the other locations mentioned in the stories.  Please respect the privacy of the owners.

Does the Lone Pine exist?

No, but the location of the famous tree can be established by carefully reading through the books and noting what was visible from the tree.  It is possible to find a point with same view.

Where is The Gay Dolphin hotel?

The Gay Dolphin combines the architecture of The Mermaid Hotel and the location of the Hope Anchor Hotel.  It is possible to enjoy the view from "Penny's Wall" in Rye.  The Hope Anchor was frequented by Malcolm Saville.

Are the characters based on real people?

No, but clearly Malcolm Saville was influenced by people he knew.  His two youngest children, Jeremy and Rosemary, pronounced "actually" as "acksherley" in their childhood and it is possible that they were an inspiration for the twins.  Unfortunately, it is not possible to meet David or Peter.

Are the Lone Pine books available in Spanish?

No Spanish editions are currently in print.  However there are some second-hand books to be found with some searching!
