Dorset coast weekend - Lyme Regis

24 members of the Society enjoyed a weekend in Lyme Regis based around the Malcolm Saville book The Secret of the Hidden Pool, and involving good weather (for the most part) and excellent food at various establishments in the seaside town.

On the Saturday, we took a tram from Colyton to Seaton (following an old railway branch line) and then walked along a section of the South West Coast Path which forms part of the newly inaugurated King Charles III England Coast Path. This included visiting the area between Seaton and Lyme Regis which is known as the Undercliff, where the main part of the adventure in The Secret of the Hidden Pool took place. After getting a feel for the area and a possible location for the "hidden pool", we returned to Seaton for the return tram trip just as the rain set in.

The Sunday involved a circular walk which started with an ascent of Golden Cap, which, at 191 metres, is the highest point on the south coast of England. Luckily, the weather was glorious and the views from the top were magnificent all along the coastline. After the walk finished in the early afternoon, people were free to do what they liked until the evening meal. This included some returning to Lyme Regis to look around the town and others visiting the nearby town of Charmouth, which is famed for its fossils. The Jurassic Coast is England's sole natural UNESCO World Heritage Site.

All in all, everyone had a good weekend and it shows that one of Malcolm Saville's lesser known books can provide lots of enjoyment!
