February Ramblings

February Ramblings

Our walking routes were based on the northern end of the Long Mynd this time, so participants found accommodation in the Church Stretton/All Stretton area.

“Into my heart an air that kills
From yon far country blows
What are these blue remembered hills
What spires, what farms are those?”
A E Housman, A Shropshire Lad

31 Society members and family/friends met up for a long weekend of walking and socialising, based in our favourite South Shropshire hill country.

We began with a convivial evening in The Kings Arms in Church Stretton, where we were very pleased to meet 5 participants for whom this was their very first experience of a Society event.

Saturday was a day of sunshine and blue skies for our 9 mile walk across the northern area of the Long Mynd, from Plush Hill to Ratlinghope and back. We were lucky to have fantastic views across to the Stiperstones and beyond, and then superb views across to all the various Stretton hills, and beyond, as we made our way back. Our evening meal in the Yew Tree Inn (All Stretton) was very welcome and enjoyable.

Sunday, though not sunny, was a lot better than expected and our 5 mile circular walk up to the Portway and back to Picklescott was new territory for most people - and somewhat muddy underfoot in places! We finished with an excellent Sunday lunch at the Bottle & Glass Inn.
