A Hertfordshire Weekend

A weekend exploring Hertfordshire!
Malcolm Saville lived in this county for several years, sometime in Harpenden and, latterly, at Westend Farm, Wheathampstead. The area was the inspiration for Jane’s Country Year and Trouble at Townsend. He also wrote his early Lone Pine and Jillies books whilst living at Westend Farm. The Society previously organised events in Hertfordshire back in 2002 and 2006.
Our programme of activities included a walk around Harpenden to see two of Saville’s homes; a 7-8 mile walk following part of the disused Nickey Line (mentioned in Spring Comes to Nettleford); and a visit to Westend Farm, Cross Farm, Nomansland Common and Wheathampstead. Some attendees chose to include additional attractions such as the nearby St Albans Cathedral, Verulamium Roman Museum, and Shaw’s Corner, home of George Bernard Shaw.
