Cycling in Saville's Shropshire 2025

A small group of members spent the weekend cycling around some of Malcolm Saville’s Shropshire locations, using many of the quiet lanes of South Shropshire.
On Saturday we covered 28 miles, Sunday 27, up and down the often steep Shropshire lanes. As well as stopping in Ludlow, Leintwardine, Bishop’s Castle and Clun, we briefly visited the other three ‘Quietest Places Under the Sun’ from ‘A Shropshire Lad’. We also heard a number of readings that linked some of our stopping places with locations in 9 of Saville's Shropshire Lone Pine books .
The 11 cyclists were joined by five non-cyclists who organised their own walks and cafes during the day, coming together for the evening meals in local pubs. Despite the gloomy wet forecast earlier in the week, apart from brief showers between bright sunny intervals on the first day, we only had about an hour's heavier rain on the Sunday afternoon, and all successfully made it back.
